Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show Host Cheryl Waters, is “Smart Accessories” the title track on the latest album by The Cute Lepers available from 1-2-3-4-Go! Records.
Since we last checked in with The Cute Lepers, they have been in perpetual motion touring up and down the west coast, nationally and even across the pond supporting punk legends The Buzzcocks. It’s a wonder how they found the time to record the follow-up to their critically acclaimed (and fan favorite) debut Can’t Stand Modern Music especially after tragically losing a band member last March. Today’s song “Smart Accessories” (also the title track) blends their brand of power pop with punk sensibilities into this fast-paced, jangly jem that incorporates horns and back up female vocals along with vigorous guitar playing and snappy lyrics. This is definitely a band to see live and luckily The Cute Lepers have some great shows happening here in Seattle before they take off on a short West Coast tour. You can catch them at their record release party at The Funhouse on 1/29, a Haiti benefit at The Tractor w/ the Tripwires on 1/31 and the Rock n’ Roll Grudge Match at The Crocodile on 2/11 where they will be battling it out Family Feud style against the Coconut Coolouts for all the door money! More dates and info can be found on their myspace page or website. For a taste of their live show, here’s a performance of “Berlin Girls” at Chop Suey last February:
