Song of the Day: MillionYoung - Hammock

MillionYoung

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we deliver songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Hammock” by MillionYoung from the 2009 EP Sunndreamm on Arcade Sound Ltd.

MillionYoung - Hammock (MP3)

Forget Vitamin D pills, Mike Diaz (a.k.a. MillionYoung) may cure the winter blues once and for all. The one-man glo-fi band from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida managed to create computerized sunshine in the form of two EPs, Sunndreamm (2009) and Be So True (2010). Influenced by lucid dreaming, the 10th dimension and film scores, Diaz’s laptop tunes are a delicate blend of beach sunset and Miami night club, much more kinectic than his mellow fellow chillwavesters.

MillionYoung sprung from Diaz’s fascination with the fast-growing hypno haze-pop (think Washed Out, Toro Y Moi and Neon Indian) and it’s purpose of creating something “dream-like and ethereal“. Yet, as the daily grind usually forces Diaz to only go out at night, he found himself straying away from the daylight/twilight inspired sound of the genre. Instead, he dove into a warm, late night hypnosis; part trance and part dance.

Sunndreamm reflects Diaz’s starlit existence between its hypnotic melodies and lonely, effervescent vocals. Released in late September, it’s no doubt he wanted to stretched out the summer for as long as possible. “Hammock” the crown jewel of the five-song EP, is the epitome of coastal paradise. Soaked in shimmering synth and tropical guitar, Diaz’s lumenescent voice (think a sweeter version of Animal Collective’s Avey Tare) ricochets along wave-walls of electronic reverb. House-beat bass prevents sun-induced delirium, while Diaz drifts farther and farther away into a space-ocean of bliss.

Diaz currently plays both live synth and guitar over prerecorded laptop tracks, but aims to add live percussion as soon as his three back-to-back performances at SXSW in May. The latest MillionYoung EP, Be So Me is now available as a cassestte at Arcade Sound Ltd or for less than $5 bucks on iTunes.
