Out This Week 3/16

The infamous SXSW week is usually enough of a musical fix for most of us tune junkies. But, with a truckload of new releases from underrated artists to the Tex-fest’s own megabands, this week may very well lead to sound overdose for many. With their Austin performance only days away, southern rockstars Drive-By Truckers couldn’t have picked a better week to release their eleventh record, The Big To-Do (tune in on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. for a live broadcast of their SXSW performance). With 3/5 of the members originally from Alabama, it’s no wonder the Athens, Georgia “three axe attack” kills the stage every time with their gritty twang and pure rock n’ roll swagger. Also playing SXSW on Wednesday, sunny pop band Happy Birthday finally proves their Sub Pop worthiness (signed in September) with their self-titled debut. Spanning soundwise from 60s psych-harmonies to 90s audacious defiance, the Vermont three-piece deserve to have their cake and eat it too as they finally join the big musical bandwagon.

One-man folk machine Sean Hayes released his sixth self-produced record, Run Wolves Run. Between his youthful vocals and electric sprinkled acoustic ambiance, the album plays in two parts: a warm, silky first half and sensualized, harder ending (catch him at the High Dive on 4/8). One of 1970′s original UK pub-rockers, Graham Parker gives us yet another indelible masterpiece with Imaginary Television. With nearly two dozen albums between his famous Graham Parker & The Rumour and solo work (not including live albums or compilations, which adds on another 33 records), Parker hasn’t lost an ounce of his talent with the new album’s solid blues-rock sound and witty political commentary. Other worth mentioning albums include Seabear’s We Built a Fire, The Whigs’ In The Dark, Lusine’s Lucky Numbers: The Ghostly International EPs, and The White Stripes’ live CD Under Great White Northern Lights.

Hit up Largehearted Boy’s list for more worth-noting new releases before crusin’ over to your local record store.
