For the fifth year in a row, KEXP hits Austin, Texas, for the South By Southwest Music Festival. Known as one of the largest industry gatherings in the United States, not just for music, but also for film and interactive media, SXSW is still a hotbed of new and budding talent. With over eighty stages in Austin, the festival has become an important place for young entrepreneurs to promote and distribute their creations.
The music conference this year starts today, March 17th, and runs through March 21st. KEXP will be broadcasting from the Gibson showroom in Austin for the next three days, with live performances by The Very Best, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Ozomatli, Quasi, Freelance Whales, and many others. Join Cheryl Waters and Kevin Cole for this fantastic event. .
Leading of our SXSW broadcast today, the British indie rock band Fanfarlo continues to build upon their debut album, Reservoir, which breaks down traditional indie-rock schemes through folk influenced instrumentation. From Australia comes The Middle East, a collective that also mixes different styles, like folk, pop, country and even electronica, to create their own nuanced indie rock sound. Combining valley surf, gospel and pop harmony, Best Coast, the LA project of Bethany Cosentino, debut live on KEXP with a set of beach fuzz pop that’ll have you looking forward to summer, only to be furthered by another band from Melbourne, The Crayon Fields, whose 60’s styled fingerpicked guitar melodies will transport you again to sunnier climes. Rounding out the day, is Title Tracks, the Washington, D.C., area project of John Davis, formerly of Q And Not U and Georgie James, whose brand of breezy indie rock blends powerpop with classic rock harmonies.
Tune in all day!
