While the lyrics to their songs might not always inspire the most romantic feelings, it’s hard to think of a better Valentines Day gift than a special live performance by Dave Rawlings Machine. Normally the guitar-wielding producer and musical companion of Gillian Welch, Rawlings has released a stellar album of his own compositions, which he brought to the KEXP studio... and with him, Ms. Welch and Ketch Secor, Willie Watson, and Morgan Jahnig of Old Crow Medicine Show. Performing as a five-piece around a single microphone(!), the Dave Rawlings Machine come through loud and clear with this sometimes rollicking, sometimes wistful, but always masterful set:

Great stuff. Saw David and Gillian in Newport last summer and was blown away.
I was visiting a friend near Seattle that week and we went to see David and Gillian later that night. While the lyrics to their songs might not always inspire the most romantic feelings, I can not think of a more memorable Valentines Day.
