If any artist is poised to conquer U.S. airwaves this year, it’s British soul songstress VV Brown. After much hype within the blogosphere, VV will release her debut album, Traveling Like the Light, a collection of retro pop tracks inspired by Ruth Brown, Elvis Presley and, just as importantly, the music from Super Mario, on April 10th in the U.S. via Capitol Records. Describing her sound as “musical mashed potatoes” and known to write on a one-string guitar, VV both embraces rhythm and romantic entanglement. When performing, VV shows a confidence and stage presence well beyond her 26 years. Not to mention, she writes, produces and performs most of the instruments on the album.
She also seems to be quite the multitasker, dividing her time recording and writing music, working on a vintage clothing line (the cleverly named VV Vintage), and developing a graphic novel, but also embarking on her first ever U.S. tour. Washingtonians have an embarrassment of VV riches because she is playing two shows in the Northwest this week. Catch VV Brown at Nectar on Friday, April 9th, as well as Sunday, April 11th at The Wild Buffalo in Bellingham. Both shows are sure to be a spectacle, as VV is opening for Swedish electro band Little Dragon who are featured on tracks from the new Gorillaz record, Plastic Beach. A spectacular line-up of imported goods of such high quality I suggest you treat yourself and attend both shows.
