Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Sharp” by The Absolute Monarchs from their self-titled, self-release debut EP.
It has been said that absolute power corrupts absolutely, but when applied to the music from today’s local band, folks are standing in line to be corrupted. The Absolute Monarchs flew out of the gate with a bang last year which is not surprising with ex-Das Llamas guitarist Shawn Kock as part of the line up. They attracted a lot of attention when they played an underground (literally) show at the Cha Cha during the Capitol Hill Block party. Several writers, including one from Spin, dubbed them a local band to watch in 2010. After playing a few more notable shows they went off the grid to work on their debut 4-song EP, which was released earlier this year. All of the tracks like today’s song “Sharp,” are unapologetically hard hitting, filled with the right level of angst and show a definite promise o things to come from this band.
You can catch the Absolute Monarchs live on KEXP during Audioasis on May 15th at 6pm or their next show on May 22nd at the Wild Rose. For more dates and info, check out their
