Out This Week 5/4

A lot of super music out today! On Heaven Is Whenever, the Minneapolis power group The Hold Steady turn a more sonically diverse and dynamic though no less hard-hitting fifth album. Gone is mustachioed keyboardist Franz Nicolay, but here to stay are the clever lyrics of songwriter Craig Finn and the band’s epic sound. Broken Social Scene and The New Pornographers compete for best Canadian supergroup, and the only winners are their fans. BSS somehow manages to rope in the core crew of Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Charles Spearin, Andrew Whiteman, Sam Goldberg, and Justin Peroff plus regular “guests” Leslie Feist, Amy Millan, Emily Haines, and Jason Collett, among others, for a positively joyous new record, while The New Pornographers pull their eight members together, including A. C. Newman, Dan Bejar, and Neko Case, as well as guests Zach Condon of Beirut, Annie Clark of St Vincent and Will Sheff of Okkervil River, for another album of delightful retro pop. No doubt you’ll be getting whatever you pay for with these terrific new releases.

Other must-buys this week include the 10,000th… I mean, the 28th studio album by The Fall, which continues to prove Mark E. Smith’s limitless creative energy; the awaited new effort from Seattle’s Minus the Bear, which trades their past math-rock leanings for some funky grooves; and another fine album of folk pop from Josh Ritter. If you’re into more electronic grooves, L.A.-based producer Flying Lotus, Baltimorean synth-pop trio Future Islands, and London’s New Young Pony Club will keep you shankin’ with their excellent new releases.

There are plenty of other worthwhile new releases and reissues to be found on record store shelves today. Check out Largehearted Boy’s list and sample the tunes below. Remember: you can make any day Record Store Day!
