What’s a little time in waiting when the results are this good? After three years, The National return with their much anticipated new album, High Violet, which elevates their moody music to a grand scale. The Dead Weather fans, though, needn’t wait so long: only ten months after the release of their debut, Horehound, Jack White and Alison Mosshart bring you the “instantaneous gratification” of Sea of Cowards, an expansion of their gritty blues sound. But talk about waiting: Seattle’s Light in the Attic is release a package of demos by Kris Kristofferson dating back to 1968, when he was sweeping floors in Nashville at Columbia Records.
Other releases that you can pick up now, without waiting any longer, include Holy Fuck‘s third full-length studio album, Latin; the fourth LP from CocoRosie, called Grey Oceans; and Li(f)e, the latest from hip hop iconoclast Sage Francis -- all three years in the making... or at least, the waiting... and all solid and quite possibly their best efforts to date.
Among the many other albums out this week and worth checking out is Matthew Houck’s followup to To Willie as Phosphorescent; a wildly ambitious (and wild sounding!) project called Gayngs, in which vocalist Ryan Olson enlists over 25 musicians from various scenes around the country; and an excellent fourth album from Brooklyn lo-fi group Woods.
