| The Ramones are as relevant today as they were twenty years ago -- How great is that? -- Joey Ramone |
Today, Joey Ramone, the gentle giant of punk, would’ve turned 59 years old.
KEXP celebrates this iconic rocker with this exclusive, never-before-aired interview with Joey Ramone, conducted by Kevin Cole.
“I was incredibly honored to have the privilege to interview Joey back in 1999, sadly just a year before he passed away,” said Cole. “And I’m excited to share this interview with the world, so people can hear him tell The Ramones story in his own words, and get a sense of what a funny, good-hearted guy Joey was.”
This rare audio will air today at 3:00 pm on The Afternoon Show, and can be heard worldwide, streaming at KEXP.ORG.
You can also stream the unedited interview in its entirety right here, including an un-aired segment where Joey talks about some of his favorite songs:

Yet another reminder of why we love you so much Kevy. Great interview, I had the opportunity to have met Mr. Hyman on a few occaision he was a very special man so so many different ways! I will always miss him!
About ten years ago I was wandering thru the local MN State Fair, and lo and behold, there was Joey. No not the real person but as only a Minnesotan could portray him. In the Crafts building there was a wonderfull portrait of him done ala “seed art”. A nice mix of sunflower seeds, what have you. I’m guessing a lot of people had absolutely no clue who it was but I was dying laughing. Yes the Ramones had made an impact!!
Thank you for sharing this interview with Ramones fans man! I really enjoyed hearing it.
