Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday, we offer songs from local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole is “Western Hospitality” by Club 8 from their 2010 album The People’s Record on Labrador Records.
Club 8 is the Swedish pop duo of Karolina Komstedt and Johan Angergård. Even though relatively unknown stateside, Club 8 have put in over a decade of work and recorded a number of albums between them. Their latest album, The People’s Record, is their 7th full length release and it continues to push the creative envelope of this band even more. Surprisingly, it was also their first time working with a Producer — in this case Jari Haapalainen (Camera Obscura and The Concretes), who gives a nice feel to the record and helps put the fragmented pieces together. While the new material is more adventurous than previous works, it still manages to carry some semblance of their bossa nova/jazz style while maintaining the fact that this is indeed a Swedish pop band. Today’s featured song “Western Hospitality” is the first single from their new album, The People’s Record. Definitely one of the catchier and up-beat songs of the summer and a great introduction to Club 8.
