Stanton Moore is a giving man. The drummer of New Orleans collective Galactic has recently put out Groove Alchemy, a new CD with an accompanying book and DVD that show aspiring drummers how to learn from the masters while at the same time develop their own techniques. There’s no slight of hand or secret guarding here… just a straightforward approach on how to carry the rhythms and styles of past masters into the future. And that’s what Stanton Moore does himself. His tangential “solo” career, actually as a trio with keyboardist Robert Walter and guitarist Will Bernard (both masters in their own right), has always been about building new songs from the tradition of others. It’s funk and groove for the 21st Century, modern music projected from the shoulders of giants. Recently at KEXP, the trio performed four songs from the new album and transformed our bland studio space into a Big Easy juke joint. Check out the videos here:
And don’t forget to catch Stanton Moore’s extended cameo on the critically acclaimed series Treme and please help support the Moore’s ongoing cause (he’s an active spokesperson): the Gulf Restoration Network, which is absolutely more critical now in the wake of the Gulf Coast oil spill disaster.
