Out This Week 6/22

Looking for a funky beat you can dance to? This week’s roundup of new releases will have you cutting a groove in no time. The Chemical Brothers seventh album flows like one long dance set, full of big beats and ambient majesty, while Danish producer Trentemøller‘s second release is a moody mix of acoustic and electronic signals. Kele, as in Kele Okereke of Bloc Party, steps aside from his successful group momentarily to step it up with a more dance-friendly solo release that even includes a tribute to Chemicals Tom and Ed. Another head-turning debut, from 21 year-old L.A. producer Will Wiesenfeld, aka Baths, is full of glitchy, summery pop that just might help ward away the gloomy Seattle skies. Meanwhile, from the more wintery climes of Finland, Regina twists electronica, world music, and all sorts of craziness into an appealing and unique mix. And Montreal band Stars return with another stellar album of dreamy electro-pop.

Among the other new releases not to be missed is the first self-titled project by Steve Mason, most recognizably the voice of The Beta Band and King Biscuit Time — fans of those projects will certainly dig this. For more quiet intensity, pick up the latest from NYC songwriter Nina Nastasia and the David Eugene Edwards (16 Horsepower) helmed Wovenhand, who are currently dropping the jaws of stadium-sized crowds of Tool fans.

And you can’t go wrong with the new John Prine tribute, Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows, featuring a roster of contemporary artists that seem hand-picked from the KEXP playlist: Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Conor Oberst, Justin Townes Earle, Drive-By Truckers, Deer Tick, The Avett Brothers, My Morning Jacket, and more!

So grab a cue from Largehearted Boy’s list, check out the songs sampled below, and make today your very own Record Store Day!
