Song of the Day: Unbunny – Winning Streak

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Winning Streak” by Unbunny from the 2010 album Moon Food on Parasol/Hidden Agenda Records.

Unbunny – Winning Streak (MP3)

Seattle’s very own Unbunny is the work of talented singer/songwriter Jarid Del Deo. A modern day Neil Young, his music is unapologetically folky and filled with sadness and despair. Six years has elapsed from his impressive 2004 album, Snow Tires, and yet the latest album Moon Food seems to be a seamless transition. Guitars, piano, organs, and accordions are more than enough instruments at Jarid’s disposal; he lets his voice do the rest. In true Del Deo fashion, our featured song, “Winning Streak,” is all about sad contradictions. Amid a psychedelic western vibe, he delivers lines like “a poison snaked coiled in a birthday cake” and “I know what’s coming but I’m scared to speak / I’m on a winning streak” with such foreboding that if this is winning, then you’d hate to see what it’s like when he loses! But you’ve got to admire the independent attitude and true DIY spirit of this unique songwriter. Fans of Elliot Smith, Sparklehorse, and, of course, Neil Young should definitely give this a listen.

You can listen to additional tracks from the band on the Unbunny MySpace page. You can stream the entire Moon Food album here. Below is a video of the song “Casserol” from 2004’s Snow Tires:

Unbunny is one of my favorite bands, and Moon Food is a solid experience. I’m super-thrilled that you’ve successfully shared it with more people than I have. ;)
