Although he’s no longer using the name “Final Fantasy,” Owen Pallett continues to build the same intricate songs that fans swoon over. As complex as his lyrics, his songs build layer by layer into a strange but enthralling amalgamation of classical music and video game narratives. Recently in the KEXP studio, Owen Pallett performed songs from this latest album, Heartland, an ultra-violent sci-fi epic following the exploits of a farmer named Lewis, with just a violin, keyboard and a loop pedal — the same setup he always uses. Check out three songs from the album plus a cover of the song “Independence Is No Solution,” originally done by electro-punk performer Sylvester Boy.
