Who lives in Seattle, and has produced beats for De La Soul, Dr. Dre and Brother Ali? Jake One is the producer featured in this week’s KEXP Documentary as part of our series Hip-Hop: The New Seattle Sound. Internationally recognized producer Jake One had humble beginnings, and he says that most of his success stems from networking and the fact that he’s always treated everyone as he wants to be treated. “I’ve been doin’ this so long I seen people start as the radio promo guy, and now they’re the head of A&R.”
In this feature, Jake talks about the day he realized that hip-hop was based on beats made from older records, and that hip-hop is really a mix of all other genres. He talks about digging, the art of finding obscure vinyl releases to make new songs with.
