Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is the self-released single “Dog Eared Summer” by Brite Futures.
Seattle electro-popsters Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head are back with a new single and a new band name. NPSH recently changed their name to Brite Futures to acquiesce to Ms. Portman wishes that her or her head not be referenced in their band name though she never brought them into any legal tidings. A statement on their website says:
“Also it has recently come to our attention that our muse Ms. Portman is not so keen on us using her name in ours. Ultimately we are lovers, not fighters, and our mamas didn’t raise no fools, so we feel it is time to move forward with a new name. We are BRITE FUTURES. No hard feelings Natalie. You remain +1 on every guest list.”
Though the new band name may not be as catchy as their previous incarnation, their music remains a positively addicting nod to the fun 80’s music that inspired it. Their debut album Glistening Pleasure kept them on the road for two years playing with the likes of CSS, The Go Team and Lily Allen before catching the ears of Warner Bros. Records who will be re-releasing the album (digitally) with alternate versions and new tracks on Tuesday.
In the meantime, Brite Futures will be a big part of the Vera Project fundraiser Drink for the Kids. They will be hosting an evening of cause consumption at Hattie’s Hat on Monday July 12th before playing the finale benefit show with Motopony on the 17th at Neumo’s. More info at their website or their MySpace page.
Here’s Brite Futures breaking the news of their new name to Natalie Portman. He should have left the Jar Jar Binks impression out…
