Maybe the best thing about working at KEXP is getting to hear new bands right when they come out. It’s a rare group who grabs your ear right off the bat. But Tame Impala did just that. I saw them on last week’s “new rotation for DJs” list and then looked for a video. This is my preferred preview method. And this is what came up… The song “Solitude is Bliss”. The video is intense, disorienting, dramatic, just like the music.
Tame Impala is a band based out of Perth, Australia, and their 2010 album, Innerspeaker, is their first full-length release. Founding members Kevin Parker (bass, vocals, guitar and drums) and Dominic Simper (drums, synth, vocals) met in music school more than 9 years ago, and have been playing together ever since. Jay Watson (bass) joined the group later on. The swirling, lush effect of the keys draw you in, and the pop melody and to-the-point lyrics become you.
Solitude is Bliss (lyrics)
Cracks in the pavement underneath my shoe/I care less and less about it and less about you
No one else around to look at me/So I can look at my shadow as much as I please
All the kicks that I can’t compare to/Making friends like they’re all supposed to
You will never come close to how I feel
Space around me where my soul can breathe/I’ve got body that my mind can leave
Nothing else matters I don’t care what I miss/Company’s okay/Solitude is bliss
There’s a party in my head and no one is invited…
And you will never come close to how I feel
Movement doesn’t flow/Quite like it does when I’m alone
I’ll be the one who’s free
You and I are friends/Can watch me today/Don’t ask me how you’re supposed to feel
You will never come close to how I feel…
