Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs from local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters is “AM/FM” by !!! from their 2010 album Strange Weather, Isn’t It? on Warp.
!!! (or Chk Chk Chk) is a band Seattleites should be familiar with. They were crowd favorites at Bumbershoot a couple years back and we even had them playing at the KEXP Music Lounge that year as well. Despite having an impossibly short name, there’s nothing small about their stature. Strange Weather, Isn’t it is the first new album since their 2007 release, Myth Takes, and the first since the tragic death of their drummer Jerry Fuchs. Despite the adversity, the band has stuck together and created a great new album in the process. While their first two albums incorporated more dance and disco, the new album feels a bit more organic and its tone darker, which might be due to the recording process beginning in Berlin. But, as frontman Nic Offer told Pitchfork recently, the album also contains some of their “poppiest stuff” to date. The opening track, “AM/FM,” shows both sides. It starts with a bit of a Manchester club beat held down by a low funky bassline and the song builds hypnotically. We just wouldn’t suggest you take what they say literally and “Turn off the radio!” but this a great opportunity to re-discover one of our old favorites.
You can find out more about the !!! or listen to additional tracks on their MySpace page or on their website. Those of you in Seattle can see them perform at the Capitol Hill Block Party on Saturday, July 24th. Until then, take a look at the great video of today’s Song of the Day, directed by Black Dice:
