Big Star: Andy Hummel, Jody Stephens, Chris Bell, Alex Chilton

  • Andy Hummel, the bassist for Big Star, died Monday at the age of 59 after years of battling cancer. This is only four months after the passing of Big Star’s frontman Alex Chilton passing away in March. Our thoughts go out to Hummel’s family. Read more about him here.

  • Jamie Stewart from Xiu Xiu and Jonathan Meiburg from Shearwater have finally officially announced their new collaboration, calling themselves Blue Water White Death. The group will release their first album October 12 on Graveface Records.
  • Neon Indian just released a new, arachnerrific stop-motion video for the track “6669 (I Don’t Know If You Know)”:

  • David Byrne and Brian Eno will be featured on the soundtrack to Oliver Stone’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. The two musicians’ songs were featured heavily the first Wall Street movie that came out in 1987. The soundtrack will feature highlights from each man’s solo work as well as some tracks from the Talking Heads.
  • While on the subject of Eno, he and St. Vincent have long been rumored to be working on a collaboration and it seems we will hear the first of their efforts August 7th as the Asphalt Orchestra will perform an instrumental piece at Lincoln Center in Manhattan which is composed by the two.   • Jack White recently covered The Beatles‘ song “Mother Nature’s Son” at the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize event. The performance is part of many others honoring Paul McCartney. The whole performance will air on July 28 on PBS and also feature Dave Grohl, Stevie Wonder, and even Barack Obama? This sounds like it should be interesting.

  • Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, a movie based off of the comic book series of the same name, seems to have a promising soundtrack. Beck has written most of the songs performed in the movie by Michael Cera’s fiction band Sex Bob-Omb. Brendan Canning also helped with the soundtrack and did an interview with Pitchfork discussing the process.
  • Delorean has a new song out now titled “Real Love.” The 12-inch of the track is out this week and the single can also be heard on their Myspace page.
