Song of the Day: The Head and the Heart – Sounds Like Hallelujah

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Sounds Like Hallelujah” by The Head and the Heart from their self-titled, self-released debut.

The Head and the Heart – Sounds Like Hallelujah (MP3)

Seattle’s The Head and the Heart hit the scene earlier this year as the apparent grandchildren of The Beatles and Crosby Stills Nash & Young. More contemporary references would be Hey Marseilles, the Avett Brothers, and Bon Iver. Regardless of how you label them, they’re in good company. Their brand of sweet, infectious pop tunes quickly draws you in and it’s easy to see how they can already be making local press’ favorites of the year. The sparse piano and violin arrangements take turns pulling your heart strings but it’s the duel vocals of Josiah Johnson and Jon Russell that make your heart ache the most.

You’ll have lots of chances to check out this band including the Capitol Hill Block Party, Vera Stage on 7/24, the Doe Bay Music Festival on August 13th and 14th, and if you’re not much into the festival scene, check them out at the newly re-opened Columbia City Theater on August 6th with Kay Kay and his Weathered Underground. You’ll find more info and dates at their MySpace page.

No matter what, though, you cannot miss their performance during the finale of KEXP’s free Concerts at the Mural Series, on August 27th.

For now, here they are performing “Sounds Like Halleluja” at the High Dive:
