Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on The Morning Show with John Richards, is “Say No To Love” by The Pains of Being Pure at Heart from the 2010 single on Slumberland Records.
Fans of The Morning Show with John Richards are no strangers to a good shoegaze band, and KEXP’ers are no strangers to The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (TPOBPAH). What a coincidence; you’d almost think this band was tailor-made for Seattle. Oh wait, they’re from New York so they already are! It’s no secret we have a love affair with bands from Brooklyn, and The Pains are one of our absolute favorites. Kip Berman and company break out the whole fuzzed out shoegaze/pop toolkit for their latest 7″ single, “Say No To Love” (also featuring the song “Lost Saint”) and it sounds fantastic. It seems everything this band touches we love. Despite the gloomy song title however, this is one of the happiest pop/shoegaze songs you’ll hear all summer. If you liked their self titled album and their latest EP, Higher Than the Stars (p.s. we loved it), you absolutely can’t go wrong here.
