Out This Week 8/3

The question isn’t so much “Are you going to get the new Arcade Fire album?” but rather “What are you going to get with it when you pick it up today?” You’d have to be living under a rock not to know that the new and third full length from Montreal band Arcade Fire is hitting the shelves today. The band hasn’t been shy about promoting it with mysterious publicity tactics and a slew of secret shows. In fact, this coming Thursday, Arcade Fire will stream their performance from Madison Square Garden on their YouTube channel, the video of which will be directed by Terry Gilliam (yes, of Python fame) -- and even more so, fans will be able to switch camera views themselves as they watch.

As if Merge wasn’t busy enough handling the Arcade Fire release, they’re also putting out the latest from NYC’s gritty rockers Versus, who apparently haven’t lost a step in the ten years that have elapsed between albums! Critics are placing On The Ones And Threes among their best work. For more dark, unbridled rock, try Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band. The Seattle band keeps getting better and better with their raw, somewhat bluesy, somewhat proggy sophomore album, Where The Messengers Meet. Want more? L.A. trio Autolux are finally ready for you to hear their second album, Transit Transit, six years in the making. And, talk about picking up the pieces and moving on: Wavves‘ Nathan Williams, whose on-stage blowout/meltdown last year seemed to signal the collapse of a growing talent, has turn his third release, King of the Beach, into one of this year’s best albums! The sunny, fuzzy, imminently catchy songs are essential to your mid-summer playlists.

There’s more to be found on Largehearted Boy’s list, but for now, sample these tracks before venturing out to The Suburbs:

Anyone else think the new Arcade Fire album cover looks like a couple of large cats on a stakeout?
