It’s not every day that you get to see one of your all-time favorite bands. This Wednesday at Neumo’s New York band Hercules and Love Affair play a live show. Their songs are a mix of club beats and jazzy/soulful pop.
The story goes that producer/composer Andy Butler asked his friend Antony (from Antony and The Johnsons) to sing a dance track. Antony is said to have been apprehensive about the first results, but after Andy made 25 different mixes of the song “Blind”, Antony finally said that one was “great”.
Personally I was stunned by the quality of the lyrics, and Antony’s voice (which reminds me of Billie Holiday). And as my mind slowly accepted the mix of decadent dance beats and emotional pop, this 2008 release “Hercules and Love Affair” became a record that I craved weekly. Another guest on the album is Nomi Ruiz, a singer who’s worked with Blondie, CocoRosie and others. She steps up to the mic on this tour (it’s not surprising that Antony is too busy to come along) and pulls off her own songs as well as Antony’s live. She’s the one that will lead the pack for most of the songs on Wednesday night. You can judge for yourself whether she fills Antony’s shoes or not.
As someone who loves almost all dance music, this record is a standout cause I also love the words. The pop element gives you a real person to watch, hear and feel while you dance. Someone who’s been through what you’ve been through. And isn’t that what it’s all about?
Hercules and Love Affair play this Wednesday night at Neumo’s on Capitol Hill. Michele Myers is the producer of KEXP Documentaries, and hosts on KEXP 90.3FM Saturdays 3-6pm and on WNYE in NYC 91.5FM Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6-9am.
