Monday News Mash-Up

  • The music world suffered a few losses this week as Phelps “Catfish” Collins, former guitarist for James Brown and Parliament/Funkadelic passed away at the age of 66 after a prolonged battle with cancer. Composer and member of The Free Design Chris Dedrick has also passed away.
  • Joanna Newsom performed two songs on Jimmy Kimmel Live this week, including a black-and-white shot “You, Me, and Bess,” and the Technicolor dream, “81”:

  • Conventional boundaries continue to shrink, as evident by the confirmed news that Justin Vernon of Bon Iver has recorded vocals on 10 songs for Kanye West‘s upcoming November album. No word on how many Vernon tracks will make the cut.
  • Before there was the innocuous catch-all of indie, there was the innocuous (and equally argued) catch-all of college rock. Now those who grew up before money could be squeezed from a subgenre can relive those moments thanks to two separate acoustic tours from college rock giants, Black Francis/Frank Black and Greg Dulli. For local fans, Black rolls into town on August 21st for two shows at the Triple Door while Dulli graces the Emerald City November 18th at The Crocodile.
  • Spoiler Alert! is the new side project from Art Brut‘s charismatic frontman, Eddie Argos. Argos made the announcement on his blog. The band’s EP, featuring songs about superheroes, can be bought here.
  • As we’ve mentioned on the KEXP blog before, The Vaselines are back with a new album… and now with a brand new video. Here’s their first single, “Sex with an X”:
