Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday, we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on The Morning Show with John Richards, is “In The Water” by Beat Connection from their 2010 self-released EP Surf Noir.
It’s refreshing to know this band is from Seattle. It’s also refreshing to know that the technology exists to allow a young DJ duo like Jordan Koplowitz and Reed Juenger to create good music seemingly out of thin air. Hell, they probably recorded this in their dorm room or basement, but it sounds like it was recorded in a much sunnier place than Seattle. Their new self-released EP, Surf Noir, is a nice change to the typical Summer setlist and something you should immediately add to your current rotation. Do they sound like anyone else? Not really, maybe a beach disco band? While they share some obvious commonality with the similarly setup USF, Beat Connection take the currently popular chillwave movement to a different dimension. If you’re like I am and you enjoy music that puts you in a different place, just try to listen to “In The Water” and not feel transformed. Did we mention the best part? Surf Noir is available for free download on their Bandcamp page. This is a local band to keep an eye on.
You can read up on the band (and others) on their uber-localĀ blog as well as listen to additional songs on their MySpace page.

This song is awesome. Can’t wait to listen to their other tunes! This is definitely an up and coming duo--new wave, fresh, with a twist...can’t get enough..play more, more, more of their music--it’s my new band fav.
Wow, I’m definitely getting a Delorean vibe from this band.
