Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Sailor Itch” by The Intelligence from Males on In the Red Records.
It’s the last Friday of “summer” 2010. The kids go back to school next week if they haven’t already. We have eight more months of “sweater weather” to look forward to. If you haven’t already noticed, DJ Kevin Cole has a knack for picking just the right song to start off our weekends and today’s song is the perfect soundtrack for our “mostly cloudy with a chance of showers” Labor Day weekend. Today’s song, “Sailor Itch,” has a laid back (yet still angsty) surf rock guitar riff that seems to capture the current mood about town perfectly. Their latest LP, Males, just came out last Tuesday and is a their sixth full length. The Intelligence’s central figure Lars Finberg shrugged off his usual recording process (he usually records all the instruments himself) in favor of having the whole band play on it. It was produced by guitarist Chris Woodhouse, who has been working with Finberg since his days in the A-Frames.
You can catch The Intelligence tonight at The Sunset Tavern with UV Race (Australia) and Seattle’s own Spurm (featuring the infamously underrooed Gary from Part Man Part Horse). Check out their MySpace page for more information. If you’re curious to see what they’re like live (nuts!), you’ll find a lot of great clips like this on YouTube:
