While there are hundreds of bands coming out of the Big Apple every year, few have the same New York ethic as The Walkmen. The five band members, nearly all friends since high school in the D.C. area, have made consistently solid music together for nearly a decade. While each album changes the band’s focus slightly — adding horns here, Latin rhythms there — The Walkmen have evaded the Brooklyn hipsterism and fleeting fads that quickly make other bands obsolete. Always present is Hamilton Leithauser’s emotive croon, but it’s the musical prowess of all the members — Paul Maroon on guitar and piano, Walter Martin on organ and bass, Peter Bauer on bass and organ, and Matt Barrick on drums — that makes The Walkmen a continuing favorite of KEXP listeners.
