Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show Host Cheryl Waters, is “Without Regret” by Brad from their first album in eight years Best Friends? available from Pearl Jam’s Monkey Wrench Records.
It’s been four years since the rumors began flying of a fourth studio album from the iconic Seattle
indie supergroup Brad. Singer/songwriter Shawn Smith (Pigeonhead, Satchel) is joined by Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam) and long-time collaborator Regan Hagar (Satchel, Malfunkshun) in releasing Best Friends?, an album that was actually recorded in 2003 after the group’s tour in support of their 2002 effort, Welcome to Discovery Park. According to the video on their website, the band wasn’t together enough and weren’t ready to put it out when it was originally recorded, but time, distance, concentration on other projects, and their work on the 2005 compilation Brad vs Satchel, which featured the best of the never released material) helped give them the space they needed to come back together at the right time. The band has been on again, off again throughout their history — they formed in 1992, released two albums, took a break, reunited in 2002 to release their third album, toured until 2003, played a few shows in 2005, then crickets until earlier this year (whew!).
Overall, Best Friends? is a bit more mellow than previous efforts especially with songs like today’s podcast song “Without Regret.” Its long intro showcases Gossard’s melancholy guitar riffs and features Regan (normally the drummer) on slide guitar. Brad recently did an in-studio performance at KEXP and will be playing two nights at The High Dive with Happy Chichester before embarking on a national tour with Band of Horses. More dates and info can be found on their MySpace page. For now, here is Brad performing “Buttercup” at a recent Haiti benefit at The Showbox:
