Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s featured selection is one of the artists performing the 23rd Annual Shake the Shack Rockabilly Ball, running this Thursday through Saturday, September 23-25, at the Tractor Tavern in Ballard. Thursday is Surf Nite with Mercury 4, King of Hawaii, Slacktone, and today’s featured artist, Frankie & the Poolboys.
Led by Ferenc Dobronyi, the lead guitarist and songwriter of the Bay Area “Third Wave” surf rock band Pollo del Mar, Frankie and The Pool Boys is a sort of surf rock supergroup that features members of notable bands of the genre including The Ventures, Slacktone, The Surf Coasters, and The Space Cossacks — basically, whoever was around to join in and have fun. The result was 2008’s self-titled release on Double Crown Records, and beyond any other possible sporadic releases, the project never intended to hit the road… until now. Following the Surf Guitar 101 Convention in Orange County, Dobronyi has gathered a touring group and will be playing this Thursday night… and live on KEXP on Thursday afternoon with Slacktone. Today’s song, “Ewa on the Beach,” is a like Western-tinged glide toward the ocean on breezy sunny day. Considering our schizo weather of late, it’s a relief to kick back to the song’s soothingly warm vibe. Don’t miss them this Thursday! Find out how to buy tickets here.
