Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show Host Kevin Cole, is “Doubt” by The Corin Tucker Band from their album 1,000 Years available from Kill Rock Stars.

The Corin Tucker Band – Doubt (MP3)

Four years ago Sleater-Kinney fans were dismayed when the band announced they were taking a hiatus. Rumors that it was permanent splitsville for the Olympia-to-Portland trio were abundant until last year when guitarist/singer Corin Tucker performed some new songs at a couple of benefits in Portland. Though we cannot say when or if a reunion is in the works, the feeling is that it’s a bit closer with the release of Tucker’s first solo album.

1,000 Years marks quite a musical departure for the riot grrrl turned stay-at-home mom who penned powerful punk feminist lyrics and often sang at the edge of her voice. It’s not to say that Tucker’s solo work is any less powerful or emotional than what she inked with Sleater-Kinney, but the tracks are more restrained and quietly powerful than her earlier work and feature more diverse instrumentation and elegant arrangements (care of her collaboration with Seth Lorinczi of The Golden Bears).

1,000 Years is not without its rockers though. Today’s song, “Doubt,” will ease the transition for long-time Sleater-Kinney fans. This guitar-driven tune has all the familiar angular melodies but features a more mature voice and feel. You can check out the album in its entirety on NPR before it hits stores on 10/5. They will be at The Showbox on 10/8 with The Golden Bears who join them on the West Coast leg of their tour. More dates and info on their KRS website. For now, here’s an interview with Corin about motherhood and rock-n-roll from an upcoming documentary:

Don’t forget that Seattle favorites The Redwood Plan will be opening at the Showbox that night! I believe the consensus is that our faces will be rocked directly off.

does it creep anyone else out that, sometimes, when she blinks, she blinks one eye at a time? (shiver)
