This week, some of our loyal donors tell us why they power KEXP. Today, Sarah from Boston shares her story:
Is there a song that always makes you smile? A song that catches you right from the opening chords and carries you back to a happy memory, or brings you comfort at a time of need? If you’re like me, you heard that song first on KEXP.
For me, the song is “Elevator Love Letter” by Stars, and the memory is the first time I tuned in to KEXP. It was 2006, I was living in Boston (where I still live now), and I had a growing hunger for new music. I checked out KEXP’s online streaming, and it was love at first listen. Stars would be first on my ever-growing list of artists discovered through KEXP.
My love of music, fostered by KEXP, eventually led me all the way to Seattle, where I first visited in October 2008. Happily, I settled right into the music-loving community at KEXP, volunteering for a shift during the Fall Membership Drive. And this year, I’m coming back for more -- I’ll be in town all week, ready to answer when you call in to make a gift!
I’ve also tried to carry that KEXP community spirit over to the east coast by creating a Facebook group, KEXP Listeners in Boston , in an effort to connect with other listeners where I live.
Very recently, I attended a Stars concert in Boston – my first time to see them live. Earlier that week, a dear family member had passed away, and after spending a couple of days alone at home, grieving my loss, I decided to venture out for the show. Standing there in the dark, I started to wonder if I’d made the right choice, but then I heard a few familiar chords. It was “Elevator Love Letter,” and it was exactly what I needed.
And I smiled.
