Thursday News Potpourri

  • Conor Oberst returns to his beloved Bright Eyes project with a new song and video for “Coyote Song,” the first song announced from the benefit compilation Sound Strikes Song. The country inspired piano ballad tackles some big topics with ease that only Oberst can pull off.

  • Belle and Sebastian want to write a song about you. Seriously. Inside copies of the band’s latest album, Belle and Sebastian Write About Love, you will find a code. After entering that code on the band’s web site, you’ll be prompted to write 300 words about love in any sense you like. The winning entry will have frontman Stuart Murdoch fly to where you live, spend an afternoon with you, then write a song about you and release it on a 7′’. Don’t believe it? Check out the contest page for yourself then.
  • The past year or so has been huge for Local Natives. The group is continuing to expand their success with a new music video for “Wide Eyes.” Enjoy.

  • In a seemingly attempt to stay hip and relevant, Taco Bell has launched a “Feed the Beat” campaign. Bands chosen to benefit from “Feed The Beat” are each given $500 of Taco Bell gift cards. Bands listed so far are Passion Pit, Les Savy Fav, Dr. Dog, Wavves, and more. The full list is available at Pitchfork.
  • A scathing letter from Kurt Cobain of Nirvana sent to MTV is now up for auction. The letter will be auctioned off on Julien’s Live. However, if you’re not feeling up to forking over the cash, an image of the letter can still be viewed here.
  • Gods of electronica Daft Punk and Pharell’s rap group N*E*R*D have teamed up on a new hypnotic track. Oddly enough, it’s titled “Hypnotize U.” With such thought provoking lyrics as “go on and touch it girl,” it is easy to say that this may be one of the most important tracks of the year... or not. But still, quite an interesting team up.

  • On the topic of interesting team-ups: performing at Los Angeles’ Orpheum Theatre last weekend, The Plastic Ono Band invited the likes of Sonic Youth, Lady Gaga, Perry Ferrel, Iggy Pop, and tUnE-yArDs to join the stage with John Lennon’s widow.
