If you’re familiar with San Francisco indie-band Two Gallants, you’ll immediately recognize the voice of its frontman, Adam Haworth Stephens. After a well-deserved rest, he has stepped out on his own with the release of his debut solo album, We Live On Cliffs. For this new project, Stephens recorded with producer Joe Chiccarelli (My Morning Jacket, The Shins, The White Stripes) and a host of guest musicians, including Patrick Hallahan and Bo Koster (My Morning Jacket) and Cody Votolato (Blood Brothers, Jaguar Love). Stephens’ new album is an easygoing, soulful collection of guitar-driven folk songs along the lines of Conor Oberst. His songwriting is not only spot-on as usual, but the distinct drawl of his voice also adds substance to what he’s trying to say. Stephens has created a truly refreshing collection of gentle and melodic folk songs with a talented supporting cast.
During his performance live from the Ace Hotel, during KEXP’s broadcast, sponsored by Toyota’s Free Yr Radio, Adam Haworth Stephens brought a full band to back him as he performed songs from new album, for what Cheryl Waters declared one of her top highlights of the festival! Check out the photos here, and head over to our Live Performances page to listen to yesterday’s performances.
