Bloodgroup could be this year’s The XX, if enough people take the time to stop and listen. Hailing from Iceland, that mystical land of musical magnificence, this rock outfit has a smooth, electronic-produced dance-pop vibe that bubbles over like steaming water from an underground fjord. The band got their start in 2006 when siblings Halex, Lilja, and Raggi Jonsdottir joined up with friend Janus Rasmussen to record an album instead of hunkering down and hibernating for the cold winter months. Bloodgroup released their debut album, Sticky Situation, on their own Sild Ehf label, which quickly elevated them to rock-star status in their homeland. Their sophomore release, Dy Land, was released in 2009 by Icelandic label Records Records. In their home country, fans lined up to see energetic singer Lilja balancing on her tippy-toes as she crooned, bounced and clapped her hands. Now, though, Lilja is gone and replacing her is the equally alluring Sunna Þórisdóttir.
During their set at the Ace Hotel NYC, at KEXP’s broadcast, sponsored by Toyota’s Free Yr Radio, Bloodgroup’s passion-drenched performance got the crowd’s pulses racing and feet itching to dance. Check out the photos:
