Song of the Day: Seapony – Dreaming

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show Host Kevin Cole, is “Dreaming” by Seapony from their limited edition single available through Double Denim Records.

Seapony – Dreaming (MP3)

As our live broadcast of CMJ from the Ace Hotel wraps up, we offer up a song that will ease you gently out of your week and into the carefree days of the weekend. Seattle trio Seapony make sweet jangly surf pop that is a perfect balance of Best Coast, The Dum Dum Girls, and The Vaselines, with just enough Ventures thrown in for good measure. Today’s song “Dreaming” is catchy and mildly addicting and brings to mind a drive to the beach on a sunny day.

Recently Danny took a few minutes to share some more info about the project:

What was the inspiration for this project?

We wanted to fuse the sounds of bands like the Softies and the Field Mice with the surf style of the Ventures.

Jen & Danny, you were in another project (the Transmittens) before this group right? How did you guys connect with Ian?

Ian and I grew up in Oklahoma. We met while I was in college and we formed our first band there. After driving to Olympia to see Belle and Sebastian in 2001, Ian and some friends decided to move there. I stayed with them for a few months, but left to live in Cincinnati. There I joined a band that Jen played bass in. Jen and I moved to Kansas so that I could start my second round of college. This is where we started Transmittens. After I graduated Jen got a job offer in Seattle. Ian was living there and we started jamming together.

How did you get involved with Double Denim?

In late August we posted a four song EP for free download. We soon started seeing blog reviews popping up. Double Denim wrote a nice review of our EP and then e-mailed us asking if we wanted to release a single.

What’s your typical songwriting process, is there a primary songwriter or is it a pretty collaborative affair?

I come up with the basic song ideas. I play these for Jen who helps me to filter out the lame stuff. She does this through the ears of a listener, which is essential. Jen and I work out the lyrics and vocal melodies. We then get together with Ian to finish all of the guitar and bass parts.

Are your songs autobiographical or where do you draw your inspirations?

They are not autobiographical. For me writing lyrics is like putting a puzzle together. We just try to fit words together that are semi-cohesive, have the right number of syllables, rhyme, and don’t sound too cheesy.

What’s the story behind today’s song, “Dreaming?”

It’s about a person who would rather be dreaming than awake.

You can check Seapony out in person on Nov. 1st at The Sunset Tavern with No Joy and La Sera or live on KEXP on Nov. 20th. More dates and info at theirMyspace page. For now, here’s a video for “Dreaming”:
