Last year, we were blown away by the diverse musical microcosm of Iceland when we attended the 2009 Iceland Airwaves festival. This year, we returned, fully intent on capturing as much audio and video footage from as many of the amazing bands as we could. For two full days, we set up camp at RÚV, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, in Reykjavík and brought in five bands each day to showcase the wide range of Icelandic talent.
Check out video from the first day, featuring Seabear, the folk-leaning indie collective steered by Sindri Már Sigfússon, also of Sin Fang Bous; the hard-hitting post-rock trio Kimono; Jónas Sigurðsson and the 8-piece Ritvélar Framtíðarinnar (“Future Typewriters”) performing funky, soulful songs with Icelandic lyrics; the much-respected elders of Icelandic post-punk, S. H. Draumur (or “B&W Dream”), who came out of 17 years’ retirement as a band to perform for the festival; and the heavy rockers Minus, often favorably compared to Soundgarden, who played a special stripped down song for this session.
