Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Merry Man,” a self-released single from West Coast producer Buddy Ross.
You may know today’s artist as part of Tacoma electronic folk/R&B outfit Motopony or the Gorillaz-ish hip hop duo Buddy Ross and Vile, but today the man behind the boards steps out on his own with the release of the single “Merry Man.” The track is about a newly re-invented, post-breakup man experiencing summer in a new light. It is haunting and intense and sways between hard and soft sounds as Ross blends the organic sounds of a piano with jarring electronic and other found sounds. Definitely makes you want to know if there is more in store from this gentleman.
Check out more info and additional tunes on Ross’s MySpace page. Also, here’s a peek at a more fly Buddy Ross from the 2008 Big Tune championship:

Very Nice, perfect actually, I want some more just like this, yes please.
Love it! This is so good! Kind of reminds me of old school Chemical Brothers.
I am a huge fan of Josiah’s work. I think he is largely unappreciated and everyone needs to experience his gift. His tunes are so tasty. Everyone should listen to Buddy Ross and Motopony too.
A great tune from Buddy Ross. Cool to hear his voice in addition to the melodic beats!
who is Jdizzle and why are you leaking my real name? haha
