Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is the new single “Rattle Your Bones” by Black Whales, available from Portland indie label New Canada Records.
Today’s song selection is the A-side of a new 7” from Seattle’s Black Whales, who offer a peek at their forthcoming full-length due out soon. Black Whales made quite a splash on the Seattle scene with their debut EP Origins (Mt. Fuji Records) last year and were a treat at this year’s Doe Bay Fest. They also recently graced the KEXP studios and gave a stunning performance. Their blend of dark psychedelic pop (think of them as a lighter, but no less powerful, version of The Black Angels), is filled with jangly guitar hooks, tambourines, and harmonicas.
Black Whales celebrate the release of their 7″ single TONIGHT at the Columbia City Theater with Dan Mangan and Jared Mees & The Grown Children. You can also catch them on the 21st at The Crocodile with Bear Hands. More info and dates on their MySpace page or website
Until then, here’s an early version of the song, which Black Whales played exclusively for KEXP at The Woods in Portland during the 2009 Musicfest NW:
