Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Americanarama” by Hollerado from their 2010 album Record in a Bag self-released on their own Royal Mountain Records label.
With so many bands taking themselves so seriously these days (chillwave, anyone?), it’s refreshing to come across a band like Hollerado. From their goofy name, to their propensity to blow confetti all over the stage — and pretty much during every song they play — to their hooky rock that’s not too far off from Weezer and Pavement at their popiest, this Manotick, Ontario, band lets you know in everything they do that it’s okay to have fun. But even in their seeming simplicity, there’s a definite method. Just watch this insane video for today’s featured song, and you can see for yourself why people are going nuts for this band who has out OK’d OK GO!
Hollerado’s debut, Record in a Bag, is precisely that — it comes literally packaged that way, stuffed with confetti and prizes! — so if you want one, head over to their website now. Recently, they were in the KEXP studio performing “Americanarama” and other songs, and you can already watch the videos here. They have only a few shows left on their U.S. tour with Free Energy. Tomorrow night they’ll be at the Music Hall of Williamsburg and then in Philadelphia and Washington D.C. before heading back to their native Canada. Check their MySpace page for dates and more goodies.
