Review Revue: God Bullies - Mama Womb Womb

Despite the fact that I didn’t hail from the Midwest, I listened to a fair amount of the output of Minneapolis label Amphetamine Reptile in the early-to-mid ’90s. Cows and Helmet were on heavy rotation in my high school years, along with some of their notorious Dope, Guns, ‘n'’ Fucking in the Streets compilations. But! Somehow Kalamazoo’s God Bullies never found their way into my collection, despite their prominent place on that label’s roster and the fact that, as I read about the record, it sounds like I would have absolutely devoured it at the time. Guess I better start making up for lost time...

“H?”

“5/17/90 - please ^ my ‘H?’ to a ‘Fuckin Godhead!!!’”

“Yow! Metal dirge w/wacky sampling and original crunchy riffs.”

“Sort of like hard rock mixed w/thick, syrupy noise. In general the songs sound too much alike. This LP might possibly be OK in L for a short time.” [I smell a fight a-brewin' . . .]

“If anyone has any idea who the guy who wrote above is, would you ask him to start signing his name?”

“D___ K___. He never signs his name.”

“Leave him alone. D____ (and M____)’s handwriting is instantly recognizable and besides, they’re both too stubborn to sign their names.”

“Hey! Cool!”

“Calls to mind S. Acid [Scratch Acid?], Hell Cows, et al. Heavy, growling. Cue ‘er up + writhe. Definitely turns my crank.”

“1-3 is great, but a red dot. 1-1, 1-2, 1-4, 1-5, 2-1, 2-3, etc. From Kalamazoo, MI.”

“Angst Angst Angst Angst Angst Angst Angst Angst Angst Angst Angst Angst Angst Angst Angst Angst (Sung to the tune of the Meow Mix theme song)”

“NNTNBT 8/1/89″ [I have no idea what this means.]

“Hot + Heavy”

“Right on!”

“‘Act of Desire’ great! I like this stuff.”

NNTNBT 8/1/89.... That was the new releases specialty show co-hosted by me and the lovely Cruella DeVille. It was on Tuesdays evenings from 6-7 or maybe 7-8, can’t recall. That notation means it was debuted on the show on that date. And I’ll also be damned if I can remember the date, but the God Bullies put on a killer show at the Vogue during one swing through Seattle. Vocalist Mike Hard looking like a serial killer on parole in a Don Draper suit a size too small. Full on AmRep style riffage with a touch of Chrome & Butthole Surfers production style. Take a look at a little live action here
