  • And the winners might be…: Last night, nominees for the 53rd annual Grammy Awards were announced. Among the expected GaGas and Biebers are a few KEXP-friendly noms, including Neil Young’s Le Noise for Rock Album, Ray LaMontagne and Cee Lo Green up for Song of the Year, Cee Lo also up for Record of the Year, and of course Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs for Album of the Year. (Can anyone tell us what’s the difference between a record and an album?) KEXP is particularly proud that Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba has been nominated in the Traditional World Music category, as his album I Speak Fula is on KEXP DJ Jon Kertzer’s label Next Ambiance, co-run with Seattle’s Sub Pop.   • It’s December and the Holiday Gift Guides have arrived just in time: Rolling Stone, Spin, and Pitchfork allĀ give their latest music-related gift recommendations. What gifts are on your wish list this year?

  • Dark Was The Night raises a million for charity: Last year’s double-disc compilation for the non-profit AIDS Red Hot Organization has reported that their project earned the charity over a million dollars! Details on the charities involved and where the money is going can be found here.
  • New album for PJ Harvey in February, new song for you now: Her first album since 2007’s White Chalk has been announced as Let England Shake and will be produced once again by Flood (U2, Smashing Pumpkins). A haunting new song, “Written On The Forehead,” is available from her website and right here:

  • Sonic Youth announces Bad Moon Rising and Sister re-releases: Later this month, the group is set to issue the first of two landmark re-releases (Bad Moon Rising on Dec 14th) with the 2nd to be released after the beginning of the year (Sister on Jan 18th). (via Under the Radar)

  • MP3 – The Pains of Being Pure At Heart: Drowned in Sound has all the details on 2 new tracks (“The One” and “Heart in Your Heartbreak”) from the upcoming TPOBPAH album expected to be released next year. You can stream both songs here.
  • Jack White fights with fans over eBay vinyl flipping: It appears the White Stripes frontman has angered some fans with comments he made on a forum regarding the practice of “flipping” his albums on eBay. His argument? “We sell a Wanda Jackson split for $10 and the eBay flipper turns around and sells it for $300″. Read all the details on Stereogum.

    Grammy-wise, a “record” is a single, an “album” is an album, and a “song” is a song that may or may not have been a single.
