Every Monday through Friday, we offer a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Waterfall” by The Fresh & Onlys from the 2010 album Play it Strange on In The Red.
Chalk up yet another great retro psych-band to the Bay Area. San Francisco quartet The Fresh & Onlys have given a nice new twist on the areas rising garage scene, with a fresh new sound and attitude for their 3rd full-length album Play It Strange. Leaning heavily on solid guitar work and the full depths of Tim Cohen’s voice, the band chose to work with producer Tim Green (Fucking Champs, Comets On Fire) to bring out a fullness to their sound that they were unable to produce on their own (they recorded their previous 2 albums in a home analog studio). The band has spent the past year with appearances at All Tomorrows Parties, a UK tour with Deerhunter, and an upcoming tour with Clinic in support of the new album. Fans of early 80′s guitar rock, early R.E.M, and The Gun Club should give this a close listen.
You can listen to more from the band on their MySpace page. Enjoy the video for our featured song, “Waterfall,” below:
