It’s not hard to love The Young Evils... and not just because the immensely funny Troy Nelson, KEXP’s Friday evening DJ and regular fill-in for the Morning Show, is in the band. Nelson, in fact, started The Young Evils to share with girlfriend and co-conspirator Mackenzie Mercer to some degree as an homage to another male/female fronted band, The Vaselines. Like the Scottish duo, Nelson and Mercer harmonize over smart ebullient pop that’s more earnest than his previous band, Black Daisy, but still maintains a wry sharp wit. Filling out the band is fellow Black Daisy comedian/songwriter Cody Hurd along with notable Seattle musicians Mark Pickerel (Screaming Trees, The Tripwires) and Barrett Jones (producer Nirvana, Melvins, Brad, etc.). Recently, they all dropped by KEXP’s studio to perform a few songs live on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole. Check out the videos now:
