Every Monday through Friday, we offer a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Crazy For You” by Best Coast from the 2010 LP, Crazy For You off Mexican Summer.
It’s nearly the end of 2010, ladies and gentlemen. If you somehow managed to go the entire year without falling in love with Best Coast’s quirky energetic ballads and fast-paced, open-hearted tunes, then I’m giving you one last chance. The lo-fi Los Angeles trio, fronted by Bethany Cosentino, hammers out thirteen fuzzed-out surf rock tracks on their latest efforts, Crazy For You. Sounding like the Jesus & Mary Chain covering Hole, Best Coast really makes you wish it wasn’t the middle of winter, with their sun-worshipping, weed-inhaling, happy-go-lucky vibe. Is it still really five months until Sasquatch and Folklife?!
If you were one of the lucky music geeks who ditched your friends’ Halloween parties to see Bethany and crew at Neumo’s, you were treated to an unforgettably intimate, costumed performance worth bragging about. Speaking of bragging, this year alone Best Coast has seen collaborations with Rostam Batmanglij (of Vampire Weekend), Kid Cudi, and Rivers Cuomo and a rise to indie stardom with their “Boyfriend” single.
If you haven’t already, go out and buy this album. You know, physically walk into a record store, spot the album of said desire, and pay for it. Does anyone know how to do that anymore? Shoot, buy it on vinyl while you’re at it, so when the summer sun comes back (I promise, it will), and it’s just too hot to go outside, you can pop on Crazy For You and listen to it crackle over the sounds of a newly purchased fan. Until then, I suppose it’ll take some of the edge off that seasonal affective disorder.
Right now, Best Coast is taking it easy, but they’ll be performing a series of shows in Las Vegas before heading out on the road with their buddies Wavves. Check their MySpace page for dates. For now, here’s a video of Best Coast’s performance of “When I’m With You” at Neumo’s:
