Song of the Day: Keep Shelly in Athens - Running Out of You

we're not entirely sure if this is the band!
(confirmed!)

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased tracks, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Running Out of You” by Keep Shelly in Athens from the 2010 12″ EP In Love With Dusk on Forest Family.

Keep Shelly in Athens - Running Out of You (MP3)

Athens, Greece’s mysterious duo known only as Keep Shelly in Athens (well, that and “RΠЯ and Sarah P.”) makes a unique blend of laid back Balearic Beat music foreign to many U.S. listeners (until now, that is). Their six-song 12″ entitled In Love With Dusk is a wonderfully atmospheric and mellow collection, made especially dreamy in our featured song, “Running Out of You.” After a few listens, we’re totally positive this would sound fantastic on a turntable, but unfortunately their limited edition beige vinyl run of 500 on Forest Family is WAY sold out! If anything though, Keep Shelly in Athens does an exceptionally good job of mixing traditional hip-hop samples and airy lounge music with their own European influenced style. Think of Beach House meets Air.

You can listen to more from the band on their MySpace page and keep up with them on their own website. There are currently no scheduled tours, but with the quickly growing media attention this enigmatic duo can’t stay hidden for long.

Here’s a fan-made video for their song “Cremona Memories”, and no, that’s Shelly, nor does she seem to be in Athens:
