Out This Week 1/18

Finally! We’re back full-steam with this week’s list of of new releases, proving that 2011 is going to be a hell of a year! The Decemberists kick it off with their followup to 2009’s The Hazards of Love, this time choosing to strip down their sound and focus less on the British folk that typically inspires them and more on American traditional styles. Speaking of traditions of American music, rock legend Gregg Allman returns with his first solo album in 14 years, a collection of mid-century blues covers recorded with producer/wizard T Bone Burnett. East Coast sailing duo and current blog buzz band Tennis debut with a summery album of 50’s girl band-influenced pop. And Next Ambiance, an imprint of Sub Pop and run by Jon Kertzer, host of The Best Ambiance on KEXP, has released its second album (the first, with Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni ba, was nominated for a Grammy!), this time with Garifuna musician Aurelio.

Other albums that should be filling your shopping carts included the latest from modern masters of sonic squall Disappears, the Midwestern pop meets glam rock band Smith Westerns, Portland’s twangy Dolorean (our recent guests live in the KEXP studio), Montreal quartet Braids, and Triumph Of Lethargy Skinned Alive To Death , the dark, twisted folk-infused rock project featuring Murder City Devils’ Spencer Moody and Pretty Girls Make Graves’ Andrea Zollo.
