Song of the Day: Wesafari – Matchbox

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show Host Cheryl Waters, is “Matchbox” by Wesafari from their self-released debut album Sea Survivors.

Wesafari – Matchbox (MP3)

Wesafari may not be on your radar just yet, but you might want to keep your eye on them as more folks catch onto their groove. One part Head Like a Kite Lite (good tunes, electronic, experimental, but without the mannequins, pandas, and boas)and one part Britt Daniel means you never know what to expect from this group but you know you’ll like it. Today’s song, “Matchbox,” is a solid shoulder shaker of a good time filled to the brim with super synthy hooks and driving rhythm and is one of the groovier songs on their latest release Sea Survivors. Wesafari are playing an acoustic set TONIGHT at The Tractor as part of Joshua Morrison’s CD release show. Levi Fuller is also on the bill. You can also see them at The Crocodile on February 23rd with Gems and Lazer Kitty. More dates and info on their website.
