Song of the Day: Joshua Morrison – Kill Devil Hills

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Kill Devil Hills” by Joshua Morrison from his latest release, Builder, available from Expanding Brooklyn.

Joshua Morrison – Kill Devil Hills (MP3)

Much has been made of singer/songwriter Joshua Morrison’s military career which is understandable considering it is so intertwined with his musical one. When he first hit the Seattle music scene he was quickly embraced both as a hometown hero and a truly talented troubadour after releasing his critically-acclaimed debut album Home which he wrote after his first tour in Iraq. Brutally honest and Nick Drake-ian in its delivery, his music was filled with longing for a place he wasn’t sure he’d see again. Now home for good, he offers up another collection of songs that talk about the struggles a returning soldier faces as they try to reconnect to their former lives, and how the idea of “Home” isn’t any closer than it was when he was away. Today’s song “Kill Devil Hills” in particular speaks of the loneliness and longing he must have felt being away so long.

”I’d trade in this war for a house in the valley
This cold piece of steel for a woman to hold
To catch a glimpse of the skyline that haunts me
Cuz’ I’m going back home.”

Right now, Joshua Morrison doesn’t have any shows posted on his website or MySpace page, but keep an ear open for his next live performance, as they don’t happen frequently but do make for a lovely evening.

Recently, Morrison celebrated the release of Builder with a live in-studio performance that proved to be both emotionally moving and inspiring. Video of his performance (with six supporting musicians) will be up shortly, but until then, here he is performing “Kill Devil Hills” solo acoust during previous time he was in the KEXP studios:
