Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “All The Places” by ::M∆DE::IN::HEIGHTS:: from the 2011 self-released Winter Pigeons EP.
::M∆DE::IN::HEIGHTS:: is the side-project of Blue Scholars DJ/Producer Sabzi. For the project, Sabzi collaborated with the incredibly ethereal voiced Kelsey Bulkin to create music that has been self-described as pop, filth, and New York. Their sexy but short four-song debut EP, Winter Pigeons, is a fantastic fusion of lo-fi indie Ppop and old-school R&B. It’s Sabzi’s first solo project since moving to New York. Could the unique sound and production of ::M∆DE::IN::HEIGHTS:: be a hint at new Blue Scholars material? With their upcoming album, Cinematropolis, high on everyone’s most wanted list, it will be interesting to see what impact the long-distance relationship has on their creativity. If this small sample from Sabzi and Kelsey is any indication, we could have something big in-store for the next Blue Scholars album. This short EP almost sounds like what would happen if you matched Neko Case with a great hip-hop producer to create unique and interesting sounds for your winter enjoyment.
